Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president, was great at many things. Unfortunately, drinking alcoholic beverages a little too much and dying of tongue cancer are two of those things. Those two things aside, he was, at one time, the President of the United States of America, a Civil War brigadier and major general, great strategist, and was influential in the northern victory of the Civil War.
Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th to serve our country as the president. Also, he was the first after the previous two presidents to finish the term he was serving. Johnson, who was before Grant, was impeached. And, Lincoln before him was assassinated. Ulysses served two terms, then, many years later, died of pitiful tongue cancer. Grant’s administration made strides in foreign policy by negotiating the 1871 Treaty of Washington, which settled U.S. claims against England coming from the activities of British-built Confederate warships that disrupted Northern shipping during the Civil War. This battle took place at Fort Donelson in Tennessee. After a long, hard, almost one sided battle, the confederates asked for surrender terms. But, Ulysses wasn’t just going to take one little forts surrender. He responded with the statement that effected the end of the war. Grant stated, “No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender.” The south then succumbed down to “Unconditional Surrender Grant” thus ending the war of the states.
Being a famous Civil War general is likely the main reason he got elected president. He was not politically prepared for the job. He was young. He just got out of out of an uncomfortable situation with the Johnson impeachment. All he was really good at was being honest, leading armies, creating well thought out strategies, and smoking a ton of cigars. This did not prepare Grant to be the leader of a country or be successful at politics. However, he did serve two presidential terms.
Grant was born almost two hundred years ago, on the 27th of April, 1822. He was then raised the town of Point Pleasant, Ohio. His father, Jesse Grant worked in point pleasant as a leather tanner. Grants mother, Hannah Simpson Grant, and father gave him the birth name of Hiram Ulysses Grant.
