As a final point, this chapter talks about the statistics of crime and how it effects the law-abiding citizens. Lott shows to the world how concealed firearms can change citizens lives for the better in this book. In Lott’s argument, he urges for those who haven’t taken advantage of their second amendment to do so. This argument has been effective overall due to his supporting evidence of crime rates and how people lives are changed with a way to protect their
Looking into the background of some school shooters reveals that the majority of shooters show a keen interest in guns or other weaponry. According to the text, after investigation incidents of school shooters a few often wrote
The participants of the study by Sharps and colleagues were 92 college students. They were instructed to watch a scene that is shown for 5 s, where a criminal pointed a gun at the victim. The
‘’Guns are responsible for over thirty-three thousand deaths in the United States annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).. In 2014, the CDC reported that 11,008 of the 15,872 homicides committed in the United States that year involved a firearm. Of the 42,826 suicides reported that year, 21,386 involved a firearm. These statistics have inspired efforts at the federal and state levels to enact gun control legislation to reduce crime and violence’’(‘’Gun Control’’). According to the statistic guns are held for over 33,000 deaths in the United States.
John Lott’s work More Guns Less Crime, 3rd edition University of Chicago press 2010, in which Mr. Lott put years of research into and covers data recorded over a 16 year period prior to publishing the first edition in 1998.(More Guns Less Crime Introduction). The second edition published in 2000 and finally the third edition ten years later. Mr. Lott points to the trend of a falling crime rate coinciding with an increase in the volume of legally carried handguns by the general citizenry. One example is considerably higher percentages of violent crime and murders in states that ban the carrying of concealed
Homicide among black men in the United States is at an all-time high and is at an alarmingly high rate among young black men, ages 15 to 24. This is a disproportionately high number compared to other races in the United States. Violence, specifically homicide by the intentional misuse of firearms, has become a cultural norm among the African American community. While it may be considered a norm to many, it does not mean it is not abnormal. This is where research comes in.
Supporters of the age restriction increases believe that the young people are not able to fully grasp the importance of the safety when handling guns. According to The Washington Post, “... there are both cognitive and physical limitations in children that make it more difficult for children to understand and apply rules they are taught…” (In 30 States). This shows that while young may be taught the correct procedures and safety of guns, they are not able to fully understand and use the safety instructions. With this information, people argue that this may be a source of the issue.
Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because it is not fair for juveniles to commit big crimes and get away with it so easily. If they want to act like adults, they should be treated. Some teens commit crimes and don't have a really good excuse on why they do it. In the article “On Punishment and Teen Killers” by Jennifer Jenkins she explains how the teenager that killed her sister, husband and her unborn child excuse of killing them was that he just wanted to “see what it would feel like to shoot someone”, which is no good excuse for what he did to this family. Another example from Jennifer's Jenkins article she states how “undeveloped brain” has nothing to do with teens committing these crimes.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
Much of the violent activity that happens in young people are attributed to youth gangs from poor society and inner-city neighborhoods. Easy access to guns can cause violence and threat more common in drug dealing, and gang fights (Lane, 104). Thus, it is necessary to have greater restriction on gun ownership and use, which would lead to a peaceful environment and reduced gun deaths and crimes in the
Some 10,000 children are housed in adult jails and prisons on any given day in America.(children-prison). There is definitely controversy over teens being charged as adults. Many people do not think of the factors that drive these juveniles to commit such heinous crimes. Factors like poor education, troubled homes, peer pressure, and mental illness lead teens to do such horrible acts. Poor education can be crucial to a teens life.
Instead of banning or limiting guns, the evidence will show that removing the current restrictions and targeting individuals instead of guns will be a more effective process. The topic of gun control has two polarized opinions. One such opinion targets the individuals responsible for the crime, instead of just the weapons. John Moorhouse and Brent Wanner tackle the issue of gun control in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, which was published in 2006 in the twenty-sixth volume of the Cato Journal. These researchers looked at the effects gun control laws had on violent crime and gun violence in the individual states.
Juvenile Justice Should juveniles get treated as adults that’s one of the biggest controversy in our nation now days, with many juveniles committing crimes that are inconceivable according to their age. Judges have the last word on how to treat this young people. Many people argue that “the teens that are under eighteen are only kids, they won’t count them as young adults, not until they commit crimes. And the bigger the crime, the more eager this people are to call them adults” (Lundstrom 87). This is why people can’t come to a decision as how these young people should be treated like.
Section 1 Everyday around the world people become very violent with weapons, one of these weapons being guns. Many people wonder where this violence originates from. A good amount of people believe it has to do with playing with toy guns while growing up and believe the violence sticks with them throughout life. However, the majority of statistics show that the toy guns itself doesn’t influence the violence but the parents do. For example my neighbor’s daughter had become violent the older
