William Shakespeare’s work has been involved in the high school curriculum for many years. Many say that Shakespeare’s ideas reveal the true human nature and that's why young adults need to study about him; However, the more that teens study Shakespeare some have agreed that it shouldn’t be apart of the standard High School curriculum due to the fact that the old English has no importance to them. Although William Shakespeare is an amazing dramatist and his works show the true reality of the world, Shakespeare’s writings and ideas need to be offered as an elective rather than having it forced on students in the normal English classes. Young teenargers today believe that the peices William Shakespeare wrote are irrelevant to them, and they are correct.
The quote that represents this in the excerpt is “For fear of that, I still will stay with thee, and never from this palace of dim night depart again. Here, here will I remain” (Scene 3) (lines 107-109.) This quote in the play really compelled the reader the feelings of how Romeo is feeling towards Juliet. Moreover, Romeo is truly a loving man and this truly conveys the power of love to the reader. In this passage, Shakespeare utilizes metaphor and negative diction to characterize Romeo as a person who is conflicted and frustrated by love, which ultimately reveals the theme that love is uncontrollable, conflicting, and short-lived. This amazing writing style always inspires me, as I love how Shakespeare introduces all this chaos at once, relates audiences to characters and then continues to challenge audiences by making them question their own lives and view on reality. Not many playwrights can make audiences question reality like Shakespeare. That’s why I love most, if not all of his work because just as you are believe to think something is going to happen, Shakespeare reveals a plot twist that leaves audiences on the edge of their seat. If I ever pursue a career in writing I would prefer screenplays and my scripts would use the same elements that Shakespeare has used in his plays to keep audiences intrigued. Another piece of Shakespeare that has inspired me to become a powerful writer is one of his most influential pieces, “Hamlet”.
Conclusion: William Shakespeare might have intended for Romeo and Juliet to represent how two people holding a strong bond of love can feel like they can disparage the hatred of the world, but such an immense passion eventually cannot exist in a world fueled by hatred and revenge. Works
Finally, the Bard of Avon shouldn’t be taught in classes because it’s difficult for students to understand, his work is not culturally diverse, and is outdated for today’s students. Of course though some people would disagree and say that Shakespeare should continue on being taught in class because “Shakespeare is truly a writer for for the whole world” (378). Yes, he may be a great writer but classrooms everywhere so diverse culturally this generation. Dana Dusbiber a english teacher from Sacramento who refuses to teach Shakespeare to her students said “I do not believe that a long-dead, British guy is the only writer who can teach my students about the human condition” ( Bradford Thomas). A dead 400 year guy year old guy shouldn’t be the only one who teaches students of today’s generation the values of love, war, and life.
It has been often said that Shakespeares plays are no longer relevant to the 21st century, but I think otherwise. I believe that Shakespeares plays are still very relatable and the themes can still connect with the 21st century. Macbeth, for example, has many themes that could connect with the themes and fundamentals of today. Some of the themes in Macbeth that are relevant today is the corruption of power, ambition, and fate. All of these themes happen today in the 21st century, making Macbeth very relevant today.
In the twenty-first century, the plays of William Shakespeare may at first appear dated and irrelevant: they use archaic language, are set in the age of Kings and Queens, and the Kingdom of England. However, it would be plainly mistaken to construe that Shakespeare’s works do not still remain integral to a twenty-first century society. Shakespeare’s plays gave the words and expressions one uses every day, revolutionized the art of theater as it was known, and forewarned about issues that would unknowingly still apply centuries later. Therefore, Shakespeare has had a profound effect on our lives by enriching our language and culture, as well as providing ideas that would still apply five centuries later, and it would thus behoove us to learn from his works and life.
