According to Merriam-Webster ethics is defined as an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior: a branch of philosophy dealing with what is morally right or wrong ("Ethics," n.d.). A police officer in the criminal justice system is the symbol of power and authority, all the way from the uniform, the badge to the gun they carry. For many people officers of the law are signs of hope, heroes, father figures and everything right that is in the world. Kids grow up with dreams of being police officers and chasing bad guys and always coming out on top.
There are ethics and codes that officers themselves must abide by, set by the prison just like the convicts they oversee daily. Criminal Justice professionals make decisions every day and they have to be able to recognize when an issue involves ethical issues. Therefore, in order to recognize these issues and make appropriate and smart decisions, it is important that the criminal justice professional study ethics. Peace officers assume a focal part in the law authorization framework. They screen criminal movement, tune in group watches, react to crisis calls, issue tickets, make captures, examine violations and affirm in court as required. It is no secret that the United States inherited much of Great Britain governmental institutions. In the Bible, Jesus says “to whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48).
Examine Your Response: Synthesis With ethics providing the base framework for the way we conduct ourselves on every level from individually to globally, it’s important to study them for a host of reasons. First and foremost, it allows us to analyze our behaviors and determine what criteria is valuable in our decision making processes. Studying ethics gives us different outlooks and perspectives on problems we may not consider when looking at it from our individually engrained default approach. It also allows us to look for shifts and changes in mindsets, attitudes, and values, so we can see how we’re progressing as a society. We’re also given the opportunity to compare and contrast our personal governing philosophies with those of others around us to see where we fit in with our society and measure how well we’re meeting the standards we set for ourselves.
However, both concepts might play a role in either situation. Some individuals question whether or not “ethics” should play a big part in law enforcement. Ethics should play a part in professional standards of conduct because it sets a standard for how individuals should behave. It is very important for police officers and any other individual in the law enforcement field to properly abide by ethical standards.
Ethics is an issue in the criminal justice field because lawyers have to defend criminals, there is a threat of helping to convict innocent people, and corruption in the field One reason ethics is an issue in criminal justices is because of corruption in the field. According to Arnold and Porter, “Corruption is an issue with lawyers because they are not physically responsible for the act of corruption but facilitates or otherwise provides assistance to a principal offender, the lawyer can be liable as an accessory or accomplice. This is particularly important to consider given the nature of a lawyer’s role is a corrupt role.”

Ethics help us develop moral reasoning, define criminal activity and what society dispense as acceptable punishment. Law enforcement agents need to operate ethically, and the society will more likely be open and ethical in interaction with them. Attorneys need to uphold ethical behavior, and not aiming to win all cases at all costs. Self-participation has to include people’s willingness to share information, participating in the jury and self-reporting criminal activities. Ethics is applied in decision making in criminal justice for effective and just decisions.
My small group experience was back in Secondary School where I was part of my school’s National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Cadet Leaders’ committee. The group lasted for approximately two years. Within the two years, we have meetings every fortnightly. This committee is a task group in which all members worked together to carry out activities for the school’s NPCC unit. The Cadet Leaders’ committee comprises of 10 members.
Ethics can be explained as principles a society develops to guide decisions about what is right and wrong. Ethical principles that society has are influenced by religion, history, and experience of the people in the group. Meaning that ethics is based on guidelines we have learned while growing up, that helps us differentiates what is right and what is wrong. For example, some people think health care should be a human right as others think it should only be available to those who can pay for it. Each group of people is guided by the principles they believe in.
When it comes to having and being able to maintain a strong moral code, front line patrol officers are the perfect example of what law enforcement requires. To ensure front line patrol officers maintain a strong moral code, they must be able to keep their integrity on and off duty. Officers should have this characteristic before they are hired and should be open for the police academy to repair and strengthen them. Law enforcement requires not only physical strength within the policing work field but also strength within one’s values and their ethical as well as moral beliefs. ‘’Values is the term given to those ideas, behaviors, and actions that are important to us.
