In the article, “Why STEM majors are a terrible investment,” by John D. Skrentny. The article gives us an understanding of why STEM majors have had a decrease in popularity. Some key reasons why STEM majors are no longer popular are the wages, the unstable workplace environment, and a constant need to stay relevant in the STEM field. According to Skrentny, many STEM job salaries aren’t worth the hard work. Many companies have been caught implementing illegal strategies to stop an increase in overtime wages. With today's economic issues like high inflation, having good pay is crucial to living a content life. I agree with the argument that STEM jobs are not worth it because with all the hard work that goes into schooling and the rigorous expectations in the daily workload of the STEM field, it doesn’t sound like that payoff is worth it. Another argument by Skrentny is that the STEM workplace can be toxic and dangerous to one's self. It has been reported by many companies that the workplace has been described as aggressive and mentally draining. In some cases, employees have taken their own lives due to their job environment. “This work stress affects both mental and physical health (Skrentny).” The author uses this quote to support his argument because this shows the possible outcomes of having a high stress job.
