Why the Assignment Could Not Be Done Throughout time students have bared the weight of anxiety and panic from not being able to finish a homework assignment. Whether it’s a math page, or a two hundred fifty point essay. The want to turn in and finish the essay is grand but due to being overwhelmed the essay may never get done. There are many reasons why a student can become unable to finish an essay, and not all have to do with being lazy or defiant. Some of the causes being anxiety, in which many teenagers are prone to, depression, and how that student learns. Anxiety, a word that weighs down on our shoulders. There are two main forms of depression, one being high functioning, the other being low functioning. Why might the two be important? They control what a person is able to mentally do without breaking down. “Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act” (Parekh). If depression changes moods, and how a student act then they become unable to do things even if the wish to do so. It’s a hard subject to go on due to everyone being different. High functioning depression is when someone can go through the day looking happy and okay then go home and be unable to leave their bed. Low functioning depression is when someone is incapable of doing anything without putting extravagant strain on their minds. It is entirely possible to bounce back and forth from the two as well. “10 to 15 percent (of teens) show symptoms at any time” (Borchard) meaning they can occur unexpectedly and unwanted. Depression could be caused by many things, including ‘triggers’. So what are triggers? “A trigger is something that sets off a memory tape or flashback transporting the person back to the event of her/his original trauma.” Trauma is caused from anything, including stress. A student may get over stressed from a project, causing a stress trauma. From there every time they look at that assignment they may get over stressed and shut down into a pit of depression making them unable to complete the assignment no matter how hard they try
