Op Ed Did you know that in the 2021-2022 school year more than 1600 books were banned? Schools ban some books that they deem “inappropriate” for a variety of reasons. Whether it's political or just inappropriate, they ban the book. Many people don't agree with this and are trying to outlaw book banning. Books should not be banned in schools since it discourages freedom of speech, as well as hurts students’ ability to think for themselves. Book banning should be banned since it discourages freedom of speech. “Book Banning'' says, “In 1982, the Supreme Court ruled that a New York board of education should have considered students' First Amendment rights before deciding to remove certain books.” …show more content…

They believe that some books can negatively impact students’ due to inappropriate or radical content. “Legal grounds for censorship in America were first established in 1873 with the passage of the Federal Anti-Obscenity Act, or Comstock Law. Introduced by Anthony Comstock, founder of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice (NYSSV), the law made it a crime to send "obscene," "lewd," "indecent," or "filthy" materials through the US mail.” “Introduction” states that the beginnings for censorship began in 1873 about censoring mail. This led to censorship in books due to similar content and people believing it is morally wrong or illegal. While this is a valid concern, this law doesn't apply to books specifically and has been deemed unconstitutional. “Book Banning” also states that “Concern that material may not be appropriate for certain age groups is often cited as a reason to restrict access.” Some parents and educators believe it isn't okay for younger people to read books made with an older audience in mind. However, censoring people from this doesn't allow them to be properly educated on things they should be and can lead to problems later in life. These reasons are valid, however they have either been legally or morally proven
