LGBT Rights Worldwide
Out of 196 countries in the world today, in 12 of those countries coming out as gay can be punished with the death penalty. Some countries feel that being gay is a 'sin' an 'abomination', 'immoral', or just unnatural. Some use the law to prevent people from coming out for fear of being punished or even killed for it. Although in 22 countries gay marriage is legal, that doesn't stop the other 172 from trying to prevent it. LGBT rights are a public issue being debated even in the farthest countries. LGBT people continue to fight for their rights globally and in their own backyards. Matthew Shepard was an American student at the University of Wyoming, who was beaten, tortured, and left to die in Wyoming on October 6, 1998. He died six days later at a hospital in Colorado from severe head injuries. The Westboro Baptist Church is an organization of self identified christians based out of Topeka, Kansas. They say that they preach against all form of sin including and especially fornication, adultery [including divorce and remarriage], and sodomy. They engage in various activities including picketing funerals, LGBT pride celebrations, soldiers funerals, and many more. They hold signs that say things like god hates fags, fags hate god, aids cures fags, thank god for aids, fags burn in hell, god is not mocked, fags are nature freaks, god gave fags up, no special laws for fags, fags doom nations, thank god for dead soldiers, fag troops, god blew up the troops, god hates America, America is doomed, the world is doomed, etc. WBC has had 57,256 demonstrations since June, 1991, at lgbt parades and other events, including funerals of what they refer to as “impenitent sodomites” including Matthew Shepard and over 400 military funerals of troops whom they say God has killed in Iraq and Afghanistan in “righteous judgment against an evil …show more content…
According to The Washington Post, 12 countries in the world being gay is punishable by death. In 66 countries any kind of gay act is illegal and you can be sent to prison for it. In 100 countries homosexual acts are legal, but some other restrictions like adoption, may exist. In places like Russia, some parts of the country allow gay marriage. Even in those parts, no gay couple is allowed to adopt a child. Russian lawmakers have also drafted a bill that would criminalize any “demonstration of one’s distorted sexual preferences in public places.”, or gay PDA. This law would only be effective on men because they say women are beings more 'guided by emotion' and they want to respect them. They already have a law against gay propaganda set anywhere a child can see. This law was set to ban the 'promotion' of homosexuality. Countries like Russia have come a long ways, and countries like Iraq and Yemen still have a long way to go. Whether being part of the lgbt community is legal or not, people still face homophobic and transphobic violence
