The creation of this system went on to be one of the most lasting contributions to political thought, but at the time of its creation, there was a lot of fighting over it. The person that led the charge to create a political party was Thomas Jefferson. Ellis says that during this time James Madison claimed that he wasn’t converting to the Republican camp but he did it despite saying he wasn’t. He went from the leader of the ultra-nationalists at the constitutional convention to the leader of the opposition that challenged the legitimacy of everything. One reason that Madison did this is because of the creation of the national bank.

He hoped that people would actually follow this precedent but we had Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson who started the federalist party and republican party. Political parties started in America because of the different views on how the government should be runned by Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson and the influences of newspapers. Jefferson and Hamilton had different views on how the government should be runned. Jefferson believed farmers were the center of the economy so, he feared that a manufacturing economy would corrupt the U.S.. Hamilton opposed Jefferson, he wanted the government to promote trade and manufacturing because he favored the growth of cities. Hamilton wanted more power to the government than the states. Jefferson disagreed and he feared the government might try to take powers given to the states.
There were 2 different political parties back then; the Federalist and Democratic/Republican. Washington warned that the 2 parties would divide the nation. He was scared that such a difference between the groups would weaken the county. Many politicians had different thoughts on what should happened and that affected Washington's decision on what show happen and when. How to interpret the constitution was another problem for the formation of political parties and also for Washington.

George Washington taking off, the birth of political parties and the troubles at home and abroad were all a part of americans responding to internal and external challenges. George washington also organized a central government and he dealt with the Whiskey Rebellion.
As the power and publicity of Thomas Jefferson rose, he created the political party we have today, the Democratic Party. He wanted nothing more but to help the farmers throughout our country. He wanted to allow people to have the right to an education, because education makes the world, simply a better place. He wanted to help established a stability economy, not just for the rich white male, but he wanted everyone to able to trust the banking system, and have a chance. He wanted to develop the culture of the country.
To the contrary, Hamilton believed that all the power should go to the federal government. Today in all elections, we have democratic beliefs and republican beliefs. It is discussed in (Document 4 ) that George Washington opposed the idea of different political parties because he thought two views would agitate the community, stir up riots, and start rebellions in our states. Therefore, Washington did not support the idea of two separate political beliefs. However, his beliefs were not accepted and instead different political parties were implemented and still exist today.
He spent the 4 years before, splitting up the political parties even further. “ This division eventually created two parties.”. This would hurt America even more, later on in history. This would open up more opportunities for voting, and more influence, in either political parties.
I believe if George Washington could see how our country is ran today he would be shaking his head and just thinking to himself “I warned these people not to start political parties.” When James Monroe was in office the republican party began to crumble. After his victory in the 1816 election he wanted to follow in the footsteps of George Washington in his farewell address. One step that he copied was he appointed rivals John C. Calhoun and John Quincy Adams to his cabinet. Monroe refused to use federal patronage to help the Republican Party, he also mentioned that he believed congress not the President should best represent the public and there for should state the policies.
In George Washington’s Farewell Address, he highly discouraged the creation of political parties. They would divide America, and ultimately bring the country to collapse. But since before its creation, America has always found a way to categorize people into groups; whether they be Patriots or Loyalists, Federalists or Anti-federalists, ect. Though Washington was probably right to warn America, political parties are almost unavoidable. Ratified in 1781, the Articles of Confederation sparked the creation of political parties.
He warned the American people of party factions. Washington felt that the then Federalists and Republican or Democrat-Republican Parties were more harmful to the people and the country.
One of his most prominent political ideologies was that political parties did no good and only cause separation in the Union. He even mentions this in his Farewell Address, “In contemplating the causes which may disturb our Union, it occurs as matter of serious concern that any ground should have been furnished for characterizing parties by geographical discriminations… whence designing men may endeavor to excite a belief that there is a real difference of local interests and views.” This quote clearly shows his views on political parties because he went as far as to say it would disrupt the Union, which to most founding fathers was the worst thing that could happen, yet many participated in the parties. Furthermore, Washington also believed in nationalism and patriotism. He wrote in Farewell Address about how the liberty of the people is the most important thing and citizens should protect it and their country in future.
Political parties tend to dominate the people and make a voice for us rather than the people giving a voice. These political barriers can lead to division within the union and will cause chaos between the north and south. President Washington believed in a neutral aspect when dealing with political parties. Throughout his tenure as president he managed to remain neutral. Opinions from many other free countries believed that political parties are useful checks on the government and help keep liberty
