Odysseus would not be considered a hero if he lived in modern times. Nowadays, heroes do things a little differently than back then, but what exactly do heroes do? Do they go missing for twenty years, get all of their crew killed, wreck their own ship, all to return home and kill more people? Nope, didn’t think so, but that’s exactly what Odysseus did, and they want to consider this guy a hero.
Odysseus did a lot of damage over the years, causing him to not be a hero. For starters, he went missing and didn’t tell anyone where he was going or what he was doing. If someone were to go missing for twenty years in modern times of Odysseus’ significance, it would be anarchy. Say our president were to leave and not discuss his whereabouts with anyone, then show up twenty years later unannounced and expect it all to return to normal? Yeah, I don’t think so. Odysseus can’t leave for twenty years and go silent, that does not make him a hero.

Sounding like a hero yet? On line 457 in the Odyssey page 574, Odysseus says “Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca.” As a result of this, the cyclops was able to pinpoint where the ship was and cause it to be sunk. Although his men pleaded with him, saying “God Sake, Captain! Why bait the beast again?” and “Let him alone” but Odysseus would not stop. His own men, who he should have the utmost respect for, were telling him he must stop with his childish behavior and he only continued to provoke the Cyclops. Odysseus let his pride get the best of him, resulting in getting his crew
