A little over a decade after having declared their independence from Great Britain and working together to agree on a rudimentary constitution, the thirteen American colonies found themselves divided on a new issue. Governed by the Articles of Confederation, it soon became evident to all the sovereign states that this doctrine was inadequate, thus the provinces of the east coast convened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cheyenne Higbie Kelli Brown Social Studies 3rd hour 03 October 2016 The United States Constitution When the Founding Fathers of the United States realized that The Articles of Confederation was weak, they soon decided to form a new Constitution. Several different ideas were proposed by people from different states. These plans were then evaluated by the committee and voted on. One of the biggest debates throughout the process of revising the Articles of Confederation was representation in the Senate for all of these states.
At the Constitutional Convention, our founding fathers met to reconstruct the Articles of Confederation, not knowing that they would create the United States Constitution, an entire new format of government. They wanted to create a government that was powerful yet restricted in certain ways, in order to create equal representation for all people. Three main compromises were made at the Constitutional Convention. These compromises were The Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise, and the addition of the Bill of Rights.
The Constitution is a document written in the late 1700's that is supposed to outline how the government should be run, but in that process, the founding fathers had to make many compromises for it to be finalized and for all the states to agree. The main thing that caused there to be so many disagreements was slavery because some states wanted it to continue while others didn’t, which caused them to have to make compromises. The constitution protected slavery because the compromises that were made caused the southern states to only speed up the process of the slave trade instead of outlawing it right away. The reason behind this is that the biggest compromise that was made was that the slave trade couldn’t be outlawed by Congress until 1808, which caused the southern states to trade more slaves at a more rapid pace.
Finally, the Small State-Large State Compromise is a framer of the constitution that helps guard against tyranny. “Representatives shall be appointed according to the population.” “The Senate of the the United States shall be composed to two senators from each state.” (Constitution of the United States of America, 1787) (Doc D) Each state had equal representation, yet the larger states had the representation the amount of people living in the state.
The Great Compromise which was founded at the Constitutional Convention wasn't formed without trouble. Many of the delegates that participated in the convention were wealthy landowners and lawyers, who owned many slaves. They failed to notice the diversity that excited within the nation. As they talked how to repair the Articles of Confederation, issues would arise that would create continuous debates amongst each other. One of the issues that would arise would be the nature of the new government.

The framers of the constitution regarded Congress as the preeminent branch of the federal government and granted Congress the power to make laws. The U.S. Congress is a bicameral legislature, which consist of the House and Senate. Congress was created in a way to satisfy both large and and small states through a debate to be known as the Great Compromise. The compromise stated that each state would have two Senators, in one chamber(Senate), and a number of Representatives propertaint to the state's population in the second chamber(House of Representatives).

I feel that it was in the best interest for the representatives of Massachusetts to refuse to approve the Constitution. They needed assurance that other amendments would be immediately proposed. After certain amendments, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights completely outlines the purpose and role of the United States government with remarkable terseness and economy of words.

This compromise helped give each state equal say in the government. As John Samples said to the Cato Institute in In Defense of the Electoral College, “ … the Electoral College makes sure that the states count in presidential elections… an important part of our federalist system - a system worth preserving… federalism is central to our grand constitutional effort to restrain power.” (Doc C). Since this nation is founded on federalism (the sharing of power between national and state governments), it only makes sense that each individual state would want equal say in the nation’s government. Samples knew that to keep the government running smoothly, each state needed equal representation in the government, thus the Electoral College.
This new Constitution called for something in between the last two forms of government they had: they called for a strong central government that would last but wouldn 't endanger the citizen’s freedom or rights. This became known as the U.S. Constitution. In the end of the Constitutional Convention, each delegate left with a copy of the Constitution to convince the states to approve it. It got ratified in 1788. In the U.S. Constitution, there were several clauses that focused on slavery, such as ⅗ Compromise, slave trade clause, and the fugitive slave clause.
