Should Special Education Students Be Educated Alongside General Education Students?

“Every child has a different learning style and each child is unique, not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding.” This quote is written by Robert John Meehan. The thinking behind positive modeling is that special needs children benefit from being in mainstream classes because they observe and emulate the classroom behavior of non-disabled students. Special Education Students should be educated alongside general education students because children with special needs deserve to be educated on an equal footing with their nondisabled peers, by positive modeling, and also mainstreaming is beneficial for teachers as well. Mainstreaming special needs students also benefit nondisabled students by allowing them to socialize and make friends with disabled students. By being educated alongside non disabled students, special need pupils will gain self confidence and demand more of themselves as students. They will also feel more a part of the mainstream school culture as a whole, since they are apt to participate in more activities, even simple ones such as walking with their peers/classmates to the school cafeteria. They can establish a safe learning environment, establish clear behavioral and learning expectations, focus on effective instruction at the appropriate level, encourage students to become self-aware of their own behavior and continually reflect on your own practice.
