Today smoking is one topic that is one most peoples mind, of either how we should handle it or if you are younger adult, should you try it just one time? It seems as if the whole country is divided on this issue. Some believe smoking should be banned everywhere while others don't care if one is smoking or not. However, Smoking is the leading cause of death now it is our turn to decide how to stop that. Should we be raising the taxes, but endangering the industry's, or should we be raising the age to 21 to see if that will stop more young people from smoking?
Smoking could stop killing people if we stopped smoking. Young people are smoking, if they don't quite before they turn 21 then they will still smoke until they die basically. Most smokers start before they are 18, and wont stop smoking just because they turn the actual legal age of being able to smoke. In the northern states cigarettes are around $10, you don't see many people smoking. In the south where tobacco sales are very low prices many people, young and old are smoking. The article Increasing Tobacco Taxes Would Reduce Tobacco Use states how the tobacco industry's feel about the tax increase, stating "The tobacco industry and its allies continually oppose tobacco tax increases because they know that price increases will reduce the number of 'replacement smokers' that they need to sustain their business as well as encourage current smokers to quit.” (NA) That article also states that "most of the research over the past decade has concluded that increases in cigarette prices lead to reductions in the prevalence of smoking and its intensity among youth and young adults." (NA) However it would be a good idea to raise taxes on tobacco products, it would greatly affect the industry's and could potentially shut down some manufacturing
