The “Wright brothers, American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who achieved the first powered, sustained, and controlled airplane flight” (Britannica). These brothers provide a perfect example of an engineer because of their creativity, designs, and improvements made. Wilbur and Orville Wright accomplished the first successful airplane flight in 1903, while also building and flying the first fully practical airplane just two years later. However, the success of these brothers, did not come right away. It would take many years of trial and error to create the final design of their airplane.
The Wright family frequently moved from Iowa to Indiana however, Heppenheimer states “The name of Wright is inseparable from that of their hometown of Dayton, Ohio, which is known for such institutions as Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.” In which, the Wright children grew up in a home where “there was always much encouragement to children to pursue intellectual interests; to investigate whatever aroused curiosity.” In a less-nourishing environment, Orville believed, “our curiosity might have been nipped long before it could have borne fruit.” (Britannica).

This lead to the discovery that they could cause the kite’s movement from climbing, diving and moving to the right or left. The brothers began the design of what Couch says is “their first full-scale glider using Lilienthal’s data”. By doing this in a wind of given velocity they needed to compute the extent of the wing surface area that was needed to lift the approximate load of the machinery and pilot. For best results they predicted that they would need a lot of wind to achieve detailed
