If your Brother was a rampaging drunk who would go around town half conscious and rape the nearest woman he saw? Would he deserve to die? And who would kill him, you? Wilfred Bohun's brother was, his name was Norman Bohun, and Wilfred thought he was disgusting, so disgusting in fact that he believed that he needed to kill his own brother. Wilfred was prideful, he thought that because he was a priest, and was humble and righteous he was above Norman, and he was right. But he also thought that he was given judgement upon Norman just because he was “better” he was prideful, and that hamartia lead to his fall.

In the story Chesterton gives a glimpse of how prideful Wilfred is, and how he believes he has all the power, solely because he thinks that God loves him more: “But if you do not fear God, you have good reason to fear men”. (Chesterton 2) Chesterton explains later in the story (spoiler alert) that when Wilfred said this he grabbed a hammer and hid it underneath his coat. With this in mind it is foreshadowing Norman’s death. But a closer look at it gives a sneak peak into Wilfred’s pride and transformation into himself in the story. Wilfred is incredibly devout. He was induced to join the catholic church by his love of gothic architecture. Wilfred also loved to pray in strange places such as high on a balcony. This created a significant dichotomy between his priestly self and his inner heart. Wilfred saw others aasa little and became extremely fractious. Thus leading him to thinking little of his brother and hating him even more. Eventually he became so prideful and self indulged that he thought it better for the world to not have to deal with this scum he called his brother. Wilfred’s actions were rash and too violent, Wilfred has been corrupted by his pride so completely that he thinks he is above human sin and has been given judgement by god to inflict upon his brother.
