In the novel The Lord of The Flies by William Golding there are two characters. Both 12 years old, Ralph the son of a naval officer and Jack a redhead with freckles and the head of the choir. Both with leadership characteristics but one siding with reason and the other with Power. First, after the boys landed on the island and found each other, Both boys had a craving for power so they nominated themselves to be leader, Jack saying “I ought to be chief”, “because I'm chapter chorister and head boy”. Then they started the vote. Only the choir boys voted for Jack, while the rest voted for Ralph because he had the conch and brought them all together in the first place. Jack was upset about this so Ralph allowed him to be in charge of the choir boys. Proving that Ralph and Jack may both want power but Ralph is not obsessed with it like Jack, because he was willing to give up some of his power to keep Jack happy. …show more content…

Jack wants to hunt down pigs and get meat to eat while Ralph wants to focus on building the shelters and keeping the fire lit. On page 42 Ralph says “We've got to have special people for looking after the fire. Anyday there could be a ship out there” This quote shows how the fire is the key to them getting rescued from the island and surprisingly, jack initially agrees to it and assigns his hunters the job of watching the fire.
