Lord of the Flies is a book that shows how power corrupts a society even when isolated and the symbols relating to power. The story starts within a fictional war around 1950, when a group of British boys survive a plane crash and swim ashore. Having no adults or rules the island soon falls into chaos. Now Lord of the Flies is filled with symbolism all having an impact on the story and how the boys change throughout. Each Group of boys from Ralph's group, Jacks quire boys and even the littluns due that no power can be had without a large following that being the littluns. All having power within the book ,all in their own way but each group gets slowly corrupted. Ralph the oldest and biggest of every boy on the island held strong beliefs on rescue and societal customs and rules. He was elected “Chief” after assembling the boys together by the conch. The conch being the first symbol of power that is shown, it represents the power in civility. Piggy, Ralph's second son who is physically weaker than the rest of the boys. He leads the quire boys on hunts for wild pigs he would hunt instead of keeping the signal fire lit. That of course being symbolism, the fire being hope and the action of ignoring it and hunting shows he has given up on rescue and now is embracing the “savages” lifestyle. After his first successful hunt the boys lean towards savagery with Jack knowing if they are to be stuck on this island forever they need a leader thinking long term. Jack uses this power to make a group of boys excluding Ralph and Piggy who wear face paint and march with wood spears.
