William Booth and Catherine Booth brought the Salvation Army into existence in 1865. After years of preaching in the streets of London to its thieves, prostitute, gamblers and drunkards, William was invited to hold series of evangelistic meetings in the east end of London. He setup a tent in the Quaker graveyard and the Salvation Army was born. William rapidly growing congregation was among the poorest of all of London. Williams and his wife were preaching hope and salvation. His aim was to offer salvation and spiritual guidance to all of the down trodden. Catherine Booth, wife was known as the Army’s mother. The extremely young and enterprising Salvationist of Australia, commenced to save poor lost souls being released from area prisons in and around Melbourne. In 1883 a Salvationist named Barker leased a house the ex-convicts were to reside in. This led to the formation of the Prison-Gate Brigade. The members of which met discharged prisoners upon their release and offered them a home and the prospect of a job. In 1885 it was reported that about 180 newly released prisoners passed through the home in nine months. The Salvationist considered fifty percent were genuinely reformed. Quickly out growing the home that was rented, the Salvationist found more houses with land to house the newly reformed men. During working hours the men were busy learning the trades of mat makers, carpenters, pig feeders, market gardeners, grooms, ploughmen, milkmen, cow house men and all cheerfully pursuing their allotted tasks at hand. The Salvation Army continued to expand and quickly realized the need for a residence for women. The expansion of the social services would grow to include what was then called the Prison Gate Brigade homes for then named Fallen Sisters. People were placed in the homes to learn to work. Prison
