Born February 22, 1884, in Westminster, Maryland, William Buehler Seabrook was an American journalist, explorer, and cannibal. In 1915, he joined the French army under the American Field Service, and subsequently served in World War I. In 1916, he partook in the battle of Verdun, where he was gassed. A year after this, he became a reporter for the New York Times; this was where his career as a travelling writer would begin. His nomadic lifestyle would be of great influence on his books and writing style, which consists of personal experiences and recounts; in the preface of one of his books, he specified that none of his works were “fiction or embroidery”.
