I did look at some of the quotes and took note that some of them were from the pope, and that greatly confused me. Most of the quotes I saw could be interpreted in many different ways, and perhaps that was his intent? To draw individual feeling from the quote first to create an emotional lens through which the reader would read his book? I feel that to be such a cheap draw, and that if he couldn't invoke feelings from his own writing and needed to use someone else's work to flavor every single chapter, maybe he should've tried rewriting his book or asking an editor to do so for him. In short, Cooper is one heck of a guy to quote all those other people so much. I'm sure William Shakespeare didn't roll in his grave too much though, because
