General William Tecumseh Sherman was called to provide a victory for the Union. Sherman marched from Tennessee in the spring of 1864 with 100,000 troops. He and his troops moved through the Appalachian Mountains toward Atlanta for 4 months (May-August). From November 15 until December 21, 1864, General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of the march was to scare civilians into abandoning the Confederates. They did not destroy any houses or towns, they took food, livestock and burned houses of people who fought back. When Sherman marched to Savannah at the end of 1864, he believed that this march would speed the end of the war, and he wanted to break the South’s will to fight. If this
