He led around 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia for the purpose of frightening Georgia’s citizens so that they would abandon their confederate cause. Sherman’s soldiers stole food, livestock, burned the houses, and barns of people who tried to fight back but did not destroy any of the towns in their path.

Most southerners were asked to leave everything behind, including their homes, cities, and town dwellings (Overly). The destruction of millions of dollars worth of property caused a lot of hardship for the south (Overly). Many were left homeless, roaming the streets of their burnt town.
This general was Ulysses S. Grant. The hope of victory for the North came when the army had victories in the Shenandoah Valley and the capture of Atlanta, Georgia (Clack, 41).

On September 2, 1864, the Union Army had successfully taken the city of Atlanta from the Confederates. General William Tecumseh Sherman was then ordered to attack enemy troops raiding the railroad supplying his men, but he had other plans.
Sherman's speech was correct to fight for the freedom of slaves. Some people may agree with Sherman’s speech while others may not. Many people agreed with Sherman because the south had a bad reason for war. Sherman had strong points that helped explain why the south would not stand a chance against the North. Sherman had lots of confidence that the North side would win the war.

Sherman's March to the Sea is the name commonly given to the Savannah Campaign. In thirty seven weeks, Sherman marched 62,000 men more than three hundred miles across Georgia. In his path lay ruin. Bridges, cotton, livestock, factories, telegraph lines and hundreds of miles of railroads were destroyed. The campaign begins on November 15, when Sherman's troops leave Atlanta after they razed it to the ground.
