The poor Virginian tobacco-growers of the 1700s blame the pressing economic issues they faced within the realms of slavery and debt as their driving force behind the American Revolution and battle for independence. (Holton, 60) The conflict between the British Merchants and Virginian farmers wasn’t shy of bloodshed; the intense debt to the merchants that the farmers found themselves in stirred anger and thoughts of rebellion which were not easily appeased. (Holton, 42) The cause for their debt is caused by a culmination of lavish spending, the decisions of Parliament (such as the Navigation Acts), and slavery.

Eli Whitney was an inventor known for creating the Cotton Gin. The Cotton Gin is a machine for processing, picking and cleaning cotton and was created in 1793. The cotton gin made the process of cleaning cotton ten times faster than slaves picking it by hand. Eli Whitney was born December 8th, 1765 and passed away in january 8th, 1825. Whitney grew up on a farm in Westboro Massachusetts with his Mom, Dad, his sister, and his two brothers.
Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin in 1794.The cotton gin was a machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber so you didn't have to do it by hand. Picking cotton by hand before the cotton gin was invented took an entire day to get one pound of cotton but once people had the help of the cotton gin, sometimes they were able to remove seeds from about fifty pounds of cotton. However, to make a profit off of his invention, Whitney started renting it off to people to use and charging them extra to have him pick the cotton himself. Because the taxes were so high, and he could make the machines, instead of being paid in money, he got to keep three fifths of the cotton that he picked.

The addictive food that is sold by supermarkets is made to appeal to the consumers’ taste and make them addicted to it. In Michael Moss’ “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food,” he mentions that the potato chip is a snack that provides a feeling of pleasure as well as a rewarding sensation in the brain through its coating of salt and fat (490). Small details food companies put in the food make a difference in the taste, which tends to attract more consumers without them aware of how they are being addicted to the food. In food companies’ perspective, the engineering of food to add more flavor and attract more consumers has no issue since it is how companies make their profits. Stephen Sanger, head of General Mills and the Yoplait brand, was able to produce $500 million in revenue from a new dessert that originated from the yogurt since it maintains a nutritive image with consumers (Moss 475-476).

Wow 4-2 “Spit your gum out right now,” my teacher yelled at a friend in class one day. Thus starts the war between students, teacher and the stick of gum. If the truth is told, this battle dates back to the mid 1800’s when chewing gum was invented. In a lot of schools, they have just banned the chewing of gum in the first place.
Chewing gum has always been against school rule ,but it is time for that to change. Schools should give students the right to chew gum and this project will provide concepts as to why. It is actually proven to help children academically. The infinite amount of individuals who are oblivious to the advantages of gum is nonsense. Chewing gum has been a controversial issue ever since it was invented in 1848, because people do not know the benefits of it.
