Mississippi writer, Willie Weaks Morris was one of the best-known contemporary -authors. Born to Henry Rae and Marion Weaks on November 29, 1934 in Jackson, Mississippi. He and his parents moved to Yazoo City when he was only six years old. In high school, he was the editor of the school’s newspaper, Morris also played many sports including baseball, basketball, and football. In school, he had honorable grades, he even graduated as valedictorian. After the completion of high school, he decided to attend the University of Texas and spent most of his senior year writing for the college’s newspaper called Daily Texan. In 1966, a Boston publisher helped Willie’s career takeoff with his first book, North Toward Home, that was released as a Vintage paperback. Morris writes about his own personal experiences throughout the American South problems, traditions, and people. As others helped him, he attracted contributions from other writers such as William Styron, Norman Mailer, Robert Penn Warren, Ralph Ellison, Arthur Miller, James Dickey, and Walker Percy.
Willie writes on the following genres, fiction, non-fiction, and memoir. The book My Dog Skip was a fiction book, but was written with such believable details; that most readers thought that it was nonfiction. The Book My Dog Skip is based off of nine-year-old Willie Weaks Morris growing up in the town of Yazoo City, Mississippi. In the book, it tells how young Willie was grateful and excited about the dog given to him on his birthday and how it changed Willie’s life.
