When was the last time you heard someone ask, “What channel is the footy on?” This is exactly why I decided to write about this issue, “Is women’s sport generally given a fair go in the media?” The reason why I chose this topic is because I feel injustice for women athletes who have done well in their sport but not getting any recognition, women’s sports are not given a fair go in the media. Are females not humans just like how males are? If so, why are the women getting so little coverage in the media? One recent example is The Southern Stars, the Australian Women's Cricket team, who had an historic worldwide victory. Also, Australia's women's football team, the Matildas, beat one of the world's toughest teams, Brazil. Had the males’ football team, Socceroos and males’ cricket team done the same thing, we would have had a live broadcast with teams of reporters, panellists and supporters flown in to cover the game. Front and back page headlines would have screamed about our success and dominance. Let’s be honest, how many headlines did you read declaring the brilliance of the Matildas or The Southern Stars? In time, I feel that if both men and women are given the opportunity, women can be equally storied. Every athlete must put 100% into their workouts, training and have the discipline and determination in order to succeed, women and men alike. Despite women working as hard as men, many men still have the stereotypical mindset that women are fragile, not aggressive. Many people presume women should not play with men. This thinking goes back to the opinion that women do not have enough strength to compete with men that women are weak and cannot compete at an elite level.
