Woman to Woman In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor interest me in many ways by providing conflicts, foreshadowing, and imagery creating characters of abnormality and distorted plot. The characters that interest me the most were the women in the story both Bailey’s wife and the grandmother. They share the trait of being women but they are two totally different types women. The Grandmother was portrayed as a proper sophisticated lady who dressed in a suit, hat and white gloves who was also very selfish and dishonest, however Bailey’s wife is very quiet and innocent. Women’s roles and expectations in society change rapidly. Which grabbed my attention. Previously women had very little say in society and were to stay home, be a good wife, and make children. Which made me jump to conclusions as to why Baileys wife was so quiet and had very little say. Letting her kids do and say whatever. “The children's mother didn't seem to hear her but the eight-year-old boy, John Wesley, a stocky child with glasses, said, "If you don't want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay at home?”” (O’Connor). Rather than her not “hearing” the kids I feel as if she wasn’t allowed to give input, which disturbs me. Women are strong human beings being put through a lot of things in the world. “A Women is like a teabag-not only in hot water do you realize how strong she is.” (Life Quotes from Famous American Women). The fact that women were discriminated against is worrying, being paid less than men and being treated differently than men. Which still seems to happen in today’s society. Like in sports people perceive women to be terrible in sports which isn’t the case some women are two times better than some men. Which is beyond unfair, what would this world be without women? Another disturbing fact in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is how racist the grandmother was saying things like “Little niggers in the country don't have things like we do.” Shows how disrespectful the grandmother was
