A quote from Malala Yousafzai during the 2018 Women's March, “We need to encourage girls that their voice matters"(hellogiggles.com). This quote embodies the change that has happened and is still happening. For it shows, that when women speak out that is when the change can happen. Over the course of history, that change is shown throughout everything from our movies to our books. In most stories about heroes, there is a female who is dependent on a male hero. Overtime that has lessened and we have come to adapt our female characters, making the male heroes and female portrayed just the same, as before they were vastly different. At the beginning of the novel, the need for a male figure is the most prominent, “‘Going? Where?" Meg reached out and instinctively grabbed for Calvin's hand...Meg screamed and clutched at Calvin...Meg felt that Calvin was being torn from her. When she reached for him her fingers touched nothing” (L’Engle 39). In the 1960s,women were most commonly housewives and their lives revolved around caring for their husbands and children. Just as Penelope relied on Odysseus, Meg relies on Calvin. Which fits the society's thoughts on women at the time. There are thousands of years between when The Odyssey was made and A Wrinkle in Time. In 8th century BC, there were many male rulers. Which supports the portrayal of Penelope as a dependent wife because that is what women were back then, they had no influence or major role. However in the 1960s, though women were mostly housewives and caretakers. They were starting to break through and get common things that men had for centuries before them, such as voting. Which is why Meg had to develop the hero traits she has like bravery, intelligence, and love. This explains how the time period and societies views affect a story. A
