Mary was born August 5, 1861 in Belleville,IL to Henry and Lavinia Richmond. She was raised by her grandmother and two aunts in Baltimore, MD after her parents died. She grew up around racial problems, suffrage, social, and political beliefs. Because she grew up around those things she started becoming a critical thinker and social activism. Richmond was home schooled because her grandmother and aunts were not familiar with the traditional education system until the age of eleven when she entered public school.
In history, every social movement had its prominent leader. The African American civil rights movement had Martin Luther King Jr., and the women 's suffrage movement had Susan B. Anthony. As for the LGBTQIA community, the obvious leader would be the man who spearheaded the gay rights movement other than the Stonewall Riot. Milk reached the greatest milestone for the movement by becoming the first openly gay man to hold public office. Elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, Dan White assassinated Milk and Mayor George Moscone not even a year after Milk won the election.
Susan Brownell Anthony was a American social reformer and a woman 's rights activist. Anthony grew up on a politically active family when they worked on the abolitionist movement to end slavery. With Elizabeth Cady Stanton they created the National woman Suffrage Association in 1869. When Anthony died women still wasn’t able to vote 14 years after her death in1920 the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. The U.S. Treasury Department put Anthony 's picture one dollar coins in 1979 that made her the first women to be honored.
In the text Shirley Chisholm is taking a stand for women’s rights rather than African American rights. Paragraph 4 it states, “ The unspoken assumption is that women are different.” What Chisholm means by this is that they are treated differently due to their gender. Chisholm believes that it is not always true that women are different. There have been many movements over time that has led America to where we are today. “The Antebellum reforms was a new, more radical anti-slavery movement that emerged by the early 1830s. Its program for ending slavery stood in stark contrast to the “colonizationist” position earlier advocated by some prominent Americans and embodied in the American Colonization Society (1816–1964)”. Shirley Chisholm was an American politician, educator, and author. In 1968, she became the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress, and represented New York 's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. On May 21, 1969 Washington D.C Shirley Chisholm delivered a speech to the United States House of Representatives about equal rights for women. Being an African American woman, Shirley personally was able to relate to the speech she gave. Based on her own personal proof and fueled by experience, her “Equal Rights for Women” speech was very persuasive.

Anthony was born on February 15, 1820. She was raised in a quaker household and worked as a teacher before she became an abolitionist and an important figure in the women’s voting rights movement. Anthony partnered with Elizabeth Cady Stanton to lead many important meetings about how these women can work together and make the society a better place and encourage the government to give women equal rights.
The Antebellum Period that lasted roughly from 1825–1850 is an era known for its many reform movements and major transformations in American society. Prior to the popularity of reform movements in American society was the 1828 election in which Andrew Jackson became the seventh president. Jackson professed himself the “champion of the common man,” where the “common man” meant white men. Nevertheless, his presidency caused the development of a more popular mass democracy, or Jacksonian Democracy as it is commonly referred to. The westward expansion that occurred during Jackson’s presidency lead to a shift in America’s economical makeup from a mercantile/market economy to capitalism.

We all know that women didn 't have as many rights as men, and they still don 't. Women can now do more than they used to, but they still aren 't equal with men. They have had to fight for so many things like the right to vote and to be equal to men. The 19th amendment, the one that gave women the right to vote, brought us a big step closer. The Equal Rights Movement also gave us the chance to have as many rights as men. Women have always stayed home, cleaned the house, and didn 't even get an education.
