Australian women in World War One (WWI) played a great role both behind the front lines as nurses and also on the home front, taking the place of many men who were at the war. Women at this time were split into four groups, 'Ordinary women ', 'working-class ', educated women ' and the 'married working-class ', all of which impacted the soldiers lives whether it be from house hold duties, to working as a nurse at the war. The Australian women involved themselves in WWI leaving a large impact on the soldiers lives. These women were very rarely recognised for their great contribution to war.
Whether it be serving on the battle field, cleansing and healing wounds, or dealing with the war on the home front, running families and supporting the soldiers, Australian women have stood by the soldiers of World War One, serving their country in different ways. The war had greatly impacted and affected the women in Australia and the ones who were away to serve. Since everything in their lives at the time revolved around the war, their lives had changed drastically to cope to this new way of life. These women provided comfort, support and help, where ever they were located, to the men who were fighting at in the front lines. Nurse and medical attendees played a very important part in World War One.
Shortly after the men started leaving to go into war women began to break away from their traditional house roles. Due to the men leaving for the war, the work force started to decrease. Women began to fill mens shoes in jobs such as bank clerks, ticket sellers, chauffeurs, elevator operators, etc. as a result. Labor Unions were adamant that women not work in the factories.
No women took the leave of men lightly, having to fulfil the then mass of vacant jobs, as well as care for themselves and others. The war was seen as a liberating experience and many women wanted to be apart of it, in home and in war. More women were joining the workforce in response to the open positions caused by men enlisting and being drafted into the war. To continue the U.S.'s productivity of supplies and to support themselves and their families, women began to take positions in workplaces that were mostly looked at to be as men's jobs by society. Women had more financial independence and were able to be employed in a larger variety of jobs due to the need for women working in factories to make materiels for World War
The Effect of Women on the Outcome of World War Two World War II effected women tremendously by taking them out of their comfort zones and chucking them into the work force and pushing them to do most of the work men normally would have been doing. The war also effected women by providing opportunities for them to serve in non-traditional roles; in fact, some of them enlisted into the military to serve the United States. The way the war effected women is that they had to take care of family in addition to performing work normally done by men. It was difficult to find people to watch after kids which made life during this time very difficult. After the end of World War II society in general was effected considering the baby boom.
World War I was a major war that affected many different countries; one country specifically was the United States of America. During the war, every single person was needed to ensure the Allies triumph against the Central Powers meaning that every person from every town had to find a way to strengthen the chances of a succesful American outcome. One specific town that helped was Summit, New Jersey. During World War I, the citizens of Summit, New Jersey played a significant role in the war effort, similar to the role that citizens played nationwide across the United States during this time period which helped contribute to the war’s resulting Ally victory.
During World War Two, many men went off to fight in the war; leaving all their jobs behind. Of course, someone had to step up and take these jobs or the country would fall and lose the war. This someone was the women, origionally only thought to be useful for housework, bearing children or some domestic jobs such as a shop assistant or nursing. But now, women were doing the same jobs as men, becoming more independent.
Men were always the workers within the family, the ones that were expected to provide for their families. When they went to war, their role within community life needed to be filled. That is when their wives, daughters, and sisters stepped up and took over. “In addition to caring for their families, [women] were left to supervise businesses and farms while the men were away fighting” (Senker). Women were already cooking, cleaning, and caring for their children, but still made time to work and provide as a father figure every single day.
The war had provided a variety of employment opportunities for women and the most common job for women was at home, working in factories and filling in positions for their husbands, fathers, and brothers in their absence. Although the highest demand for workers were in previously male-dominated
