Women's Roles During The Mexican Revolution

Women’s social position during this time of social and political upheaval of the Mexican revolution started to change slowly but there was change that was undergoing. The political and social upheaval of the time aided many of these women to step out of their traditional roles and fight alongside their men in this monumental time for Mexican politics. With leaders like Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa who as seen before had more respect for his wife than most men did, gave women the benefit of the doubt and would support them in future endeavors. Women would also become more involved with the war by aiding to those wounded warriors and becoming nurses. Reed had stayed in Don Felipe’s house and as a form of hospitality the wife and daughters would aid the sick and wounded men; that shows a more progressive involvement to help during the revolution, however they still had to maintain doing their regular tasks (Reed, 96). …show more content…

This time of revolution inspired many women across the globe to step out of their laborious housewife chores and take matters into their own hands to fight for the rights they deserved. The role of women was undermined throughout all the revolution. There were women called the Soldaderas who had fought alongside the men but their role was minimized as many people in Mexico still thought that all women did was cook and clean for their husbands and that was there form of contributing to the war (Diniz, Letti). All of these women during the revolution that wanted change to happen wanted most of all to be respected by the men in their everyday lives and to be seen as equals.
