Wonder By R. J. Palacio: An Analysis

In the beginning of the year we were given the option to read whatever we want, and you want to know, “Did it work?”. With the ability to be able to pick whatever book we chose, we had a lot of freedom. I think that giving the students the ability to read whatever they would like during the year is a good idea, but it is not enforced enough for people to consistently read outside of school. Though the problem with enforcing the students to read with weekly papers or something, is that you are taking away their freedom for when they want to read.

There are a few books that I read this year that have had life lessons for people trying to learn. The first book was “Wonder”. “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio is about a boy named August. He is trying to get through his first year of middle school, his first year in a public school at all. But the twist is, he was born with a few diseases that have caused some severe facial issues. The entire book is about the journey that he goes on throughout that year, friends that he meets, friends that he loses, bullies, and all of the normal middle school stuff. The point of the book is to try to be “kinder than necessary” with the principal even bringing it up at the end of a pep rally towards the end of school. The book is being written by the grandson of a knight, working his was to knightsmanship. Each chapter is another lesson, with a couple examples being, love, or partnership. The book is going between these chapters with a new lesson every time. The book was made for people trying to find out more about themselves, or new things they can adapt to. The book helped me to realize that you can’t just focus on one thing in life, everything must be done well. And again, without the freedom we were given, I wouldn’t have been able to read this
