Wonder is an inspirational, uplifting film that has come to touch the hearts of many. It was released in 2017, directed by Stephen Cobosky and was derived from the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The film is about a young boy who faces a condition called Treacher Collins syndrome which is a rare genetic condition that affects the bones and tissue in the face. Because of this for most of the time Auggie wore an astronaut helmet to conceal his face. Auggie was homeschooled for a majority of his life but during his fifth grade year he was brought on to face the challenge of going in person to school to carry out his studies. The story of Auggie shows that despite the cards you’ve been dealt you can’t let them take control of how it affects you. It shows us that courage is imperative to overcoming your obstacles. That we should show the people around us love and compassion. R.J. Palacio the author of the book this movie was based off of says the inspiration for the book he got was when he looked at a young girl with facial differences that were presented similar to Auggie’s. He says, it got him thinking about how it must be like to face out in the world everyday that's not sure of how to face you. Throughout the film Wonder Auggie faces a number of challenges, one of the biggest ones being his entrance into the fifth grade. Facing the school building for the first time through his astronaut helmet as students scour around the entrance, Auggie gets a gut wrenching feeling. The discernment he expected to receive put him in a still hold, fearful as his mom walked him off and his dad and sister stood by. This makes you wonder why his parents would subject Auggie to such a sentence knowing all well how this experience may go for him. Throughout Auggies life, he’d been treated like anything but a normal kid, deprived of any meaningful bonds outside of his family. And so when his parents sent him school, they knew all well what atrocities Auggie might face but it was out of good intent. To give Auggie the chance at a normal life that he was never able to receive. Towards the end of the scene we receive a wholesome father-son just before Auggie is shipped off to school. Here his dad tells him he’s not alone and he should take off his astronaut helmet. Again, this is in no way to punish Auggie but to show him that he had to step out of his comfort zone and face the school head on in confidence. Towards the end of the film during a ceremony, Auggie reflects back on the many memorable bonds he’s been able to make and the many moments of happiness he's gained as finds himself then thanking
