The term workaholic is a common phrase used in today 's’ work environment. Dictionary.com defines the word as a person who works compulsively at the expense of other persuits. In this paper I will talk about the ethical problem of workaholism and the employment structure that it is built around. According to our textbook, Organizational Communication: Balancing Creativity and Constraint, several organizational theorists have labeled a finer definition of workaholism as an actual disease. The role of communication technology largely promotes workaholic behavior. Now a days everyone has a smartphone and most likely with that, an attached email. It used to be just the desk phone, so once you left work you were no longer able to be reached. Then gradually the world of cell phones came along and then anyone can be reached if desired. College can be tough to balance but every night shouldn’t be spent in the library until midnight. There needs to be the proper amount of social life mixed with school. By social life I mean doing stress free activities to help relieve yourself from mental exhaustion of school work. In a 15 credit semester there is a certain amount of hours that need to be spent on school work in order to be successful. Although, some students and even friends I know have this mentality of nothing ever being good enough, a anxious state of mind. I believe this mentality is even more prevalent today for how competitive the job market is after school. It never used to be like this and with that being said, studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between GPA and starting salary. This generational difference can help aid toxic behavior by students because of the social implications connected to success in school. Aiding the behavior of workaholism is an ethical problem that is overlooked when creating a workplace structure.
