William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is an influential novel which reveals the darkness of mankind and evil inside of all humans. Lord of the Flies is set in the early 20th century, during a time when Europe is under attack and surrounded by war. For this reason, a plane carrying a group of British schoolboys is flown away from the chaos in hopes of bringing the boys to safety. Suddenly, the airliner is mistaken for a military aircraft and taken down. After all of the pandemonium the boys soon realize that they are the only survivors.

As a group, they will learn how to survive and create tribes and leadership roles. Not everything is perfect with the groups they create. There are many situations that are driven by fear through out the story but the main situations are when the boys eat the pig, when piggy is killed, and the attempt to kill Ralph.

An example of this is when Ralph believes that the fire should be their number one priority because it could signal a boat that could save them from the island.

These effects can be seen through their teamwork in shelter building, arguments, and Simon’s death. Shelter building was a task that set the boys apart. Building required teamwork which the boys struggled with, which often led to arguments like this one between two of the boys, “well, we haven't got any yet.

The book, published on September 17, 1954, tells the story of a plane crash that caused a group of children to be stranded alone on a deserted island. Through the long days and nights, they survive trying to get help. They slowly are driven insane, giving rise to a conflict that makes the kids split off into two groups going to war with one another.
