Musicals are widespread and loved throughout the world. They have been around for a long time, but became popular after World War I, and impacted American culture greatly. Musicals came to America at the beginning of colonization (Mark Lubbock, p. 1). They were constantly a focal point, but made their big debut during World War I, when people staying at home needed happiness and entertainment. They were always big in other countries, including France and Britain, so it was not a surprise when they became popular in America. When colonists first settled America, they were not super popular, but during the American Revolution, they were used as a light in the darkness, to bring a bit of joy to the depressing setting. They died down a bit until World War I, where they were once again used as entertainment. With lots of family members being sent to war, people were very down and sad. The quest for a "real American musical" had always been searched for, but was not really important until now (Mark Lubbock, p. 2). The people wanted something original, not obtained from Britain, and a true American musical seemed like the perfect way to brighten everyone's moods. They were originally most popular in Britain, with just a little less popularity in France. Francophiles will often say that they originated in France, but that has not been proven true.
