As many countries joined WWII, many of them were finding new ways to protect themselves. Thus the atomic bomb was born. The Germans found a way to split a uranium atom that created a huge explosion thanks to famous scientist, Albert Einstein. In the United States, the Manhattan Project inflicted significant tension onto its citizens. During World War II, the various nations involved became extremely competitive in their efforts to successfully engineer an atomic bomb. For this reason, a desperation arose in The United States to keep information regarding the Manhattan Project absolutely secret. At the same time, propaganda spread fears of foreigners, especially of spies involved in America's defense or government. On December 7, 1941 Japan attacked the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii out of nowhere. The U.S. had no warning and suffered heavy casualties as a result. This event forced the U.S. to retaliate by joining the Allies during the Second World War. As the years went on and the fighting continued, around August, 1945, it was clear Japan was out of the picture and had lost. Although they did not want to admit defeat, Japan was going to do one of two things: surrender or fight to the last man.

The use of the atomic bomb in World War II was a horrifying site. Although the use of the first bomb on Hiroshima may be justified the use of the second bomb on Nagasaki was not. The use of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima was a necessary step towards winning the war with Japan. The dropping of this bomb saved many American lives that would have most likely been lost in the war effort had we decided not to use the atomic bomb.
