Back then American women had one role in society. Americans saw that American women should be at home taking care of the family but that all changed. In 1890-1925 marked a great change for American women. The United States had become a more industrialized and modernized society. The role of American women was greatly changed mainly from economics, politics, and the assumptions on women during 1890-1925.
The late 1800’s were a crucial time for women in America. Typically, during this time women were discriminated against in every aspect of day to day life. However, men already had the basic rights that women all around the world during the late 1800’s were fighting for. As well as this , women were mostly stereotyped and were not given the same opportunities as men in everyday life.
One of the most momentous reform movements that our country has experienced has been the Women's Rights Movement. This movement has had influential effects on the economic, social, educational, and political aspects of women's lives. If the pivotal reform of women's rights had not occurred, then our world and lives today could look a lot different. The Women's Rights Movement started gaining momentum in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention in Seneca Falls, New York with the “Declaration of Sentiments''. This document stated that all men and women are created equal and women should have equal rights to vote, own property, and seek employment.
Before the Reformation, women not seen or viewed as equals to men in any way. Men believed that a woman's role is to bear children and be something like a housewife, taking care of the children and the house. They were not to hold any major responsibilities because society believed that it is not a women’s place and that they would not be able to handle it since they thought that women have limits. During the Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, society’s attitude toward women changed. The society started to view women as equals in religion and education, but apart of society still believed in the subordination of women, which caused some things not to change.
Women throughout history have always been oppressed. They were thought of as objects to create families and keep the husband happy. This began to change when women started to argue for more rights in the 1800’s. It still took many years for women to receive equal rights though. In 1920 women in America were finally granted suffrage, meaning the right to vote.
As promoted by the traditional commercials, men look for women with raven-like hair, emerald eyes, and a slender figure (Browne 39). The Victorian traditions encouraged women to maintain slim bodies and maintain long hair. Such a tradition prevails today as most of the men view slender women as attractive; hence, their preference for dating slender women to voluptuous ones (Sharp & Keyton 17-19). Conversely, the author claims that women want handsome, chisel-chinned CEOs looking forward to marry and have children after long romantic dating (Browne 39). Such an ideology conforms to the traditional postulations of physical traits of masculinity and the capacity of a man as the provider (Gaines 80-81).
Women in the Progressive Era The Progressive Era was a time of change across America, a time when the country chose to reform into an industrialized urban country. Prosperity was widespread across America, so people turned to social issues to try to expand. Minorities in particular became a focus of this time period, and everyone tried to find a way to integrate them into society.
Were women important to United States history? Let’s be honest, majority of the time women get maybe a few pages in textbooks and are rarely covered in most history classes. The Progressive Era is where this changes; where women are finally brought into the limelight. The role of women within the Progressive Era and the establishment of the welfare system were both audacious and necessary because the welfare system could not have happened without women’s willingness to fight for the society as a whole, not just themselves.
Throughout the history women were treated badly and unevenly. Women were trying to gain their rights and being independent. However, their chance of gaining rights always been beaten down by the unequal treatment and gender discrimination. For example, women worked in factories with low wages and long hours. In spite of the unequal treatment, women became independent after WWI.
Hello Teryn, Great post, I defeintly agree that for women they are still held up to a high standard as a whole, whether it is apearance or personality. overall I beleive that woman will never escape the Gender Policing because we are always held under a microscope with high expections. all in all no matter how hard society tries to enfornce gender neutrality it is almost impompossible to convince people to beleive in neutrlity because everyone is intitled to there own opionion. I also beleive that because of the many types of media that show how gender rols should be were a woman should be pretty, skinny and dolled-up with tiny dresses and a man must be physiclly fit, attractive and have money. Before beginning this research project, could anyone name a female, besides Rosa Parks, involved in the Civil Rights movement? Don’t worry, I couldn’t name anyone either. Rosa Parks made so many amazing contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. However, there are many women just like Rosa in the Civil Rights movement who go nearly unrecognized for the acts they took during this time. One example of a powerful and impactful woman during the Civil Rights movement is Dorothy Height.
Women’s Rights in the US “I have thrown down the gauntlet, it is time to restore women their lost dignity and make them part of the human species,” (Mary Wollstonecraft Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society ). Women around the world are struggling to control their own lives. However, people in the United States think that women in the US are the exception. Nevertheless, they are not correct. The US government should enforce laws protecting women’s control over themselves, enable them to get good jobs and be well represented politically.
Woman have been fighting for equality for a long time. We are still fighting to today to close the wage gap between men and women. The women's movement fought for their unalienable rights and the right to vote. The arguments of the women's movements were revolutionary.
The 20th century saw a major increase in women’s rights, getting a step nearer to gender equality. It is defined as the act of treating men and women equally, having the same access to right and opportunities no matter the gender. Although it is not a reality in our world, we do have advanced in comparison to the last century. At the begging of the 20th century women still were considered the weak gender. Their education consisted on learning practical skills such as sewing, cooking, and using the new domestic inventions of the era; unfortunately, this “formal training offered women little advantage in the struggle for stable work at a liveable wage” (1).
Gender Equality is the only way forward. What is gender equality? Gender equality is achieved when all genders enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making, and when the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are equally valued and favored.
