The Context of the Drought Situation
The recent drought in California has necessitated renewed attention on water management policies and practices. This presentation highlights some of the actions taken to manage the situation as their importance in future drought management strategies. This paper sheds light on the context of the situation in three dimensions: the economy, health, and environment. In addition, this presentation discusses the strategies employed to solve water scarcity in California.
California’s Economy in Context
The drought has directly affected California’s economy through reduced crop yields which generate revenue to the government. The 2016 drought is estimated to have caused massive loss of agricultural revenues up to U.S. $247. The drought imparted far-reaching consequences to other sectors of the economy, thus leading to loss of jobs.

As a result, the affected populations have engaged in health-threatening practices in order to cope with the situation. For example, some residents have been forced to reduce the frequency of hand washing before a meal in order to conserve water for drinking. In some cases, some residents of California opted for unhealthy fast foods since the water available is insufficient for irrigation. Conversely, the residents have also taken some positive actions in order to mitigate the effects of drought. Such actions include reducing shower times, repairing water leakages, and replacing high water-consumption appliances with more economical ones.
