Many people think a “Perfect” world is possible, but the truth is it’s not. The society in The Giver is presented as a utopia. Any colors in their world has been erased in “Sameness” as well as all emotions. This so called perfect world is supposed to give all it's citizens a happy life. However, most of them seem to only think they have happiness. By depriving the citizens of choices, the creators of Jonas’s society made a deterioration from our world. One example that supports this is in chapter 13, when Jonas says “We really have to protect people from wrong choices.” (Lowry, “The Giver” 93). A very important part of life is making mistakes. It makes us unique and allows us to learn and grow. However, their community has had this experience taken from them. One example of this is the quote “Very briefly and a little guiltily, he tried to grasp it back. But the feelings had dissapeared.” (Lowry, “The Giver” 38). The citizens in this world haven’t even had a chance to feel emotions because the community is given pills to prevent feelings of any kind. This means people in this book have never felt joy, happiness, or love. Another quote to support this idea is “I wish we still had that [love]. Of course, he added quickly. I understand that it wouldn’t work very well.” (Lowry, “The Giver” 119). The most fascinating thing about love is it's such a complex emotion. It comes in many different forms and can be hard or easy, happy or tragic. I think it's unfair that this has been taken from their community for “practicality”.
