In the novel Wuthering Heights, which is written by the English novelist Emily Bronte, several devious acts of revenge are committed amongst the characters throughout the book. First, Heathcliff plans to get revenge on Edgar Linton by marrying his younger sister, Isabella. Next, Catherine, who was married to Edgar at the time, wishes to get revenge on Heathcliff by blaming him for her death and sickness. Finally, Heathcliff wants to get revenge on his abuser, Hindley Earnshaw, by reaping what Hindley sewn and abusing Hindley’s only son, Hareton. Many characters struggle to overcome their desire of revenge, especially Heathcliff who is involved in many of these revengeful scenarios. Because Edgar Linton married and took away his true love, Catherine, Heathcliff plans to get revenge on him by wrongfully marrying his younger sister, Isabella. “You and Edgar have broken my heart, Heathcliff! And you have both come to bewail the deed to me as if you were the people to be pitied! I shall not pity you, not I. You have killed me - and thriven on it, I think.” ( Bronte 153 ) This quote shows that even at the end of her life, Catherine believes that the only way to make herself feel better is to blame Heathcliff for her weakness and death by leaving him alone in the world without closure and making him feel the same pain that she has been feeling for months on end. This example proves that the cruel thrill of revenge is severely contagious between the characters of this story, and again Heathcliff is involved in many other vengeful scenarios proving that his life is only fulfilled when he is the reason for others pain and
