History of the Baylor Scott & White Healthcare Dr. Arthur Scott began his career as a chief surgeon at Santa Fe Hospital in Temple in 1892. He was 27 years then. In 1985, he held a competitive interview in which he needed to recruit a surgeon at the hospital. During the interview and examinations, Dr. Raleigh White emerged the highest scorer and therefore, he was hired.

This led to the purchase and conversion of the abandoned St. Mary’s catholic Convent for use as a permanent hospital. This became the headquarters of their health facility. They applied for a charter meant to study, prevent, relieve, remedy and care for all human disorder and diseases in 1905. After this, the hospital hired Dr. Claudia Potter, who became the first female anesthesiologist in both Texas and the United States.
Because of the death of Dr. White due to heart attack in 1917, the partnership was changed on May1, 1917 to include Dr. Scott Sr, his brother-in-law Dr. Marcel W. Sherwood and Dr. George V. Brindley, Sr. In 1922, the name of the hospital was changed to Scott & White Memorial Hospital. Another hospital was named the same way in 1933 when the American College of Surgeons approved the institution as the first cancer diagnostic and treatment center. On October 27, 1940, Dr. Scott died of heart attack. Therefore, his son Dr. Arthur Scott Jr. took his position as the President of the
