Section 1:Identification and Evaluation of Source
The question being explored is, To what extent has foreign influence by the United States following the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences affected Germany? The Yalta and Potsdam Conferences were scheduled to help figure out how the world would be organized after World War II. The Yalta Conference was held in February (during war) and the Potsdam Conference was held in July (post European war) of 1945.
The main source that will be evaluated is titled, “Crimea (Yalta) Conference, 1945”. It was written within the eight days, Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin meeting. These three world leaders are also known as, The Big Three. The report was officially signed on February 11th, …show more content…

The Soviet Union had East Germany and everybody else had what's called West Germany.However, Berlin, the capital, was in the middle of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics section of Germany. Since they could not let the Soviet Union have the entire the also spit the capital. However, Joseph Stalin did not follow the agreed rules of running his section of Germany, such as, letting the people vote and having a democracy. He wanted his new people to me communist. The capital of Germany, Berlin, was split in half , democratic and communist. East Germans would only be able to get to West Berlin, not West Germany. West Berlin was landlocked by Communism. Since people were escaping East Berlin, the communist authorities then overnight decided to put up a wall. This famous wall is the Berlin Wall. It was put up to separate the two parts of Berlin. This separated the people of this country. There was no way out if you were in East Berlin. This seperated the nation socially because they had two completely different governments, half was trapped in in a dictatorship and the other half was free. Thus, leading to the Cold War. The Cold war started in 1947 and ended in 1991. The Cold War was a war that was all suspense, there was no action just one upping each other. There was different races for example, the arms race and the race to space. The Cold war also caused proxy wars. Proxy Wars are are wars instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved. The Cold War had three main proxy wars, The Vietnam War, The Korean War, and The War in Afghanistan. What happens is the Unites States or the Soviet Union would begin to try and influence a country, then the other country would come in and take the opposite side whether it was the side they would usually take or not. This csuse them to fight without having to do all the heavy lifting. The arms and space races were the two countries constantly trying to show that they are the more powerful superpower. The arms race was them creating bigger and bigger weapons leading to things like the Cuban Missile Crisis. Weaponry became highly more advanced during this time.
