Humans have a history of being the highest level of species, but they are not perfect; animals aren’t evolved as long as humans, and they have no power to fight with humans. However, Pi uses animals as the characters of his novel because he loves animals, believes they should be treated equally with humans, and think that humans are the most dangerous species. Firstly, Pi uses animals to symbolize the characters because he loves and is familiar with animals. In the book, Pi says that he loves animals such as sloths since they remind him of his desire to be peaceful: “I spend more hours than I can count a quiet witness to highly mannered, manifold expression of life that grace our planet. It is something so bright, loud, weird, and delicate as to stupefy the senses” (Martel 19). The quote indicates that Pi is extremely curious and familiar with animals. Pi often stay in zoo, so he must notice that animals are always injured by humans: “We commonly say in the trade the most dangerous animals in zoo is human. In the quote, the humans’ desire of benefit pushes humans to overhunt wild animals in order to exchange money. Therefore, humans tend to hunt all over the world. As a result, humans are the most dangerous species on the world since there are only benefit in their eyes. Plus, in order to attract people from different ages, he ought to use ‘harmless’ and pure characters to make suitable for all people.
