It was 8:00 at night when I was getting ready for bed; however, after I was finished, my dad would read me one of Dr. Seuss's marvelous books. As I was growing up, I thought the books that Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote were nothing but rhyming and nonsense, but when I reached seventh grade, I learned they had powerful meanings. Dr. Seuss is more than nonsense words and rhyming. Dr. Seuss targets issues like: pollution, environmental issues, big business, communism, dictatorships, cold war, racism, segregation, discrimination, responsibility, and a child’s imagination being squelched by adults. Three of his most prominent books are The Lorax, Horton Hatches the Egg, and The Sneetches.

“I speak for the trees,” said the Lorax. In the book, The Lorax, the Once-ler and the Lorax play a role. This story can happen world-wide. Dr. Seuss wrote this story in 1971. In this story, the Once-ler chops tress, builds a factory, and makes all creatures vacate. The problem in this story is destruction of nature to build business. To solve the problem, the last truffula seed is planted which preserved the environment. This story expresses responsibility and faithfulness. Dr. Seuss is more than nonsense and rhyming. Horton Hatches the Egg was written in 1940. It takes place in various places including: the sea, New York, where the circus went, and near Palm Beach, FLorida. Horton, Mayzie, the egg, hunters, and the circus crowd play a role. Throughout the book Horton is asked to do Mayzie’s job by sitting on her egg but Mayzie wants the egg back when it hatches. As a result, the egg turns out to be Horton’s
