Walking into graduation, every graduate expects to hear the same speech with little variance about reaching an important milestone in life but still having many more milestones. Paul Hawken delivered a different message with his commencement address, You Are Brilliant and the Earth Is Hiring. His message was filled with hope for the future since people are working together to build a better world for all. Hawken begins with, “Humanity is coalescing. It is reconstituting the world, and the action is taking place in schoolrooms, farms, jungles, villages, campuses, companies, refugee camps, deserts, fisheries, and slums (2009, p. 55).” The philosophy to make the Earth great again sparks at a young age with students in school. They are doing it because they want to make the world a better place to live for them and for future generations. Their actions could be small and simple such as recycling a plastic bottle instead of throwing it away to help conserve materials and keep products out of landfills or giving a stranger a smile to make their day better. These small actions add up around the world to make big changes. Organizations as well work without recognition, “like the Mercy Corps, it works behind the scenes and gets the job done (Hawken, 2009, p 55).” For example the Mercy Corps helped to begin the organization Yes Youth Can in Kenya in 2008. Yes Youth Can empowered young Kenyan leaders, reduced the amount of violence in in the country, and lead to more peaceful elections. Since the organization was founded, Mercy Corps has continued their involvement by working with the work to maintain money (Docksai, 2013, p 8-9).
