The ideas that have been introduced to me by both reading and discussing the book, “You are What You Love”, by James K.A. Smith, will impact how I live my life. To be more specific the idea of liturgical practices forming the core of my being. This book has changed my viewpoints on what it truly means to be self-reflective. I have learned that a way to truly know oneself is by evaluating the choices they make. The term “liturgies” has been defined by the dictionary as, “a Eucharistic rite.” To me this translates as, “a connection with God that is truly sacred.” I grew up in a church home that introduced me to terms like this at a young age. I can look at them and dissect how they are forming me as not only an individual, but also as a believer and Christian. Checking my phone every morning forms me in the western narrative that we discussed in class. It shapes me by looking at what has changed in the outside world and then letting it affect my day. Since I spend time doing this act, it means that I love it. This is where it gets difficult for me. I can’t truly say what it is about checking my phone in the morning that makes me love it. Is it the way that I can respond to emails, calls, and texts with ease, or do I love catching up on the news from around the world.
As for eating lunch with my friends, I believe that it is shaping me to grow a love for people, especially this particular group of guys. I love being able to grow friendships and share that time with them. It helps me shape a continuous practice of spending time with the people that are important in my life. When it comes to praying before every meal, I believe it shapes me more spiritually than any other way. I do it because I love the Lord, and I need to spend time with God each and every
