Most students in the United States go through their K- 12 schooling years not knowing how to write a proper essay. Most teachers are all about short cuts and getting papers done with the least amount of work as possible. This has led to college students not knowing the basic skills that professors assume they already know. With teachers avoiding teaching necessary writing skills and today’s technology creating shortcuts to use for everything, students are not only having trouble comprehending the English language, but also with writing grammatically correct essays. In the article “For $100k, You Would At Least Think That College Grads Could Write,” contributor George Leef expresses his opinion on the flaws in writing education in the United States. Young adults are paying for a college education, but upon graduation they are lacking the skills of basic writing. Professors are focusing too much on major academic ideas rather than devoting time to improve their skills. This is setting up newly graduates for failure because they aren’t qualified enough to write for certain jobs. My high school recently acquired Chrome Books to give to students to use throughout their high school experience. This allows every student the option of writing online where millions of shortcuts are given to make it as easy as possible. Most writing systems I use automatically correct your papers for you which prevents me from catching mistakes myself and learning from them. Everything is getting much easier and no one is showing the same amount of effort including myself because we don’t have
