“Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera.” Yousuf Karsh is one of the greatest portrait photographers in the 20th century. He was brought to Canada from America by his uncle in 1924. Yousuf Karsh became very popular and as his fans grew, so did his knowledge and expertise. He published 15 books and created many inspiring photographs of various different public figures. He was an American-Canadian, portrait photographer who inspired many in Canada because of his immigration, expressive photographs of people 's personalities and his extremely impressive work on people like Winston Churchill. His photos just simply could explain so much about one person, even those who are introverted. “Within every man and woman a secret is hidden, and as a photographer it is my task to reveal it if I can.” Before each photo sitting, Karsh sits down and has a conversation with each client, and really soaks in and examines their personality. This method, as well as others, is why his photos are so unique and favoured. He then photographed many of the great and celebrated personalities of his generation, every one wanted his photographs and books.
Yousuf Karsh impressed so many! Even the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. Yousuf Karsh wanted to capture a photo that showed Churchill’s unshakable rigidness and perseverance; and that 's what he did. Not only impressing his fans, but Churchill himself. Yousuf always tried to explain a person through his photo’s and to do that with Winston Churchill would be incredibly challenging. He only had one shot.
