I think that Youth Court works with first-time misdemeanor offenders because they are being sentenced by their peers. The offenders are between the ages where social situations are vital to their reputation. It could be because the offender doesn’t enjoy being judged by their peers, or that the youths can relate to the offender because of that age range. Youth Court is about rehabilitating the offenders back into the community by providing them with positive alternative sanctions. Having them take on responsibility and accountability for their actions, and showing them how they affected everyone around them. Providing the offenders with guidance and rehabilitation techniques they are less likely to re-offend. The benefits of Youth Court are that the program doesn’t just help the offenders, it also aids the numerous volunteers that give their time to the program. It provides the volunteers experience and knowledge of how court hearings progress and the jobs involved. It can help them try out something new, and see if they want to further a career in that field. Volunteer work is valuable for their future academics, resumes, and/or college applications. At the end of both programs we had grown to be good friends, and it was hard to say goodbye. She would invite me to come see her concert where she played the violin, and a big smile would spread across her face when she would find me in the crowd. I think she needed someone to treat her with respect and implement rules when she broke them. I provided her with small future goals to shoot for, and an alarm clock as a going away present. June graduated the truancy program my last semester. She managed to stay out of the court system, and I believe that she has a much brighter future ahead of her within the
