The family stared at the row of barracks identical to the other thousand or so morose looking structures. With the plain, unsophisticated appearance, Yuki did not comprehend that this was the setting where her life would change from a fulfilling existence into a monotonous survival. “It isn’t a very exciting place, but you’ll get used to it, trust me,” the boy informed with a sorrowful grin. “Well let’s get settled in,” Ken disheartenedly sighed. He led the family through the dusty hazel door into a hallway of entrances to rooms on both sides. They trudged into the entryway labeled “Apartment C” and gazed at their surroundings. “I’m Ricky, ask around for my name if you need me,” he stated, swiftly retreating from the scene of despair. Through the complete silence, only the faint whistling of the wind could be heard while the three family members started to unpack the few remaining belongings left. Once everything was in place, Ken plopped down on a rusty bed and got a prolonged metal screech in response. Finally, Yuki started to speak. “So what do we do now?” she asked, the spark of curiosity arising. Discovering what was in store for her throughout the internment camp was definitely something that her brain was eager to unearth. “Ken, go with Yuki and explore this camp, I’ll stay here and continue organizing,” Mom ordered, obviously dreading to experience more of their new home. Yuki followed Ken out of the the barracks and into the sandy outdoors. There, she realized that there wasn’t much to see after all. Carbon copies of barracks sat row to row as far as the eye could see, and in the other direction there was the passage leading to the main center where other Americans of Japanese ancestry were being shipped in. However, there was something that wasn’t there before: a girl about Yuki’s age strolling along a crumbly path.
