Zachary Taylor was born on November 24, 1784 near Barboursville, Virginia. Most of his childhood was spent in Louisville Kentucky. He was born into a family of planters, by 1800, his family owned over 10,000 acres and 26 slaves. He knew from an early age that he wanted a military career. His first military job was the commander of the garrison at Fort Pickering. After he was married in 1810, him, his wife, and his children settled down in Louisiana. Even though he was a military person, he was known for having many slaves. He started to gain prominence as an “Indian Fighter” in the battle against the Indians, but he wanted to help them keep their land from being taken by white setters. He earned his nickname “Old Rough and Ready” due to sharing
